Grenoble Alpes Metropole is a French middle size, high tech and industrial urban area located in the Alps and composed of 49 municipalities.

As an intermediary administrative level, it is in charge of energy, mobility, waste management, water and sanitization, but also economic development, social housing, etc., for the whole diverse 49 localities, some of them rural and mountainous, others dense and urban.

With half a million inhabitants, almost 65000 students, 25000 researchers, numerous renown fabs and labs, and strong international relations, it is deeply oriented toward the smart city transition (new energies, clean transportation, circular economy, local food policy) with the support of its active local 500 start-ups, research facilities, engaged SCO, and local leaders, who contributed to the European green capital award 2022.

Smart Transportation

Grenoble Alpes Métropole is a French, high tech industrial urban area located in the Alps.

With 1/2 million inhab. 65000 students, 25000 researchers, & numerous renown fabs & labs, strong international collaborations, it is deeply oriented towards the smart city transition (new energies, clean transportation, circular economy, local food policy) with the support of 500 active local start-ups, research facilities, engaged SCO, & local leaders, who all contributed to the European Green Capital award for 2022
With strong geographical constraints & air quality issues, Grenoble Alpes has initiated a strong & proactive program to improve air quality thanks to smart energy, smart mobility and circular economy solutions, with a local air climate energy master plan. The EU has rewarded these efforts with the European green capital award.
Details of some smart mobility solutions and one specific smart energy solution as follows
• An Urban cable car project, connected to the tram network
• Agressive Bike deployment, incl. post covid temporary bike lanes
• Free- floating Hybrid electric bicycles and e-scooters sharing services
• H2 deployment solutions including refueling platforms
• Low emission zone regulation
• Smart urban heating loop, including high efficiency wood incinerator
