Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida as well as the southeastern United States. Its population reached near one million in 2018. JTA announced its Ultimate Urban Circulator (U²C）program a few years ago to enhance its urban transportation systems in response to the growing population and to enhance and expand its over-30-years-old elevated monorail system Skyway. One initiative of the U²C program is to deploy autonomous vehicles to serve the public transit needs of the city, increasing service flexibility and accessibility as well as providing on-demand transportation services. An Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system using autonomous buses on dedicated lanes reduces the complexity of the implementing new rail systems that generally require time-consuming and costly infrastructure development such as tracks and signaling. LILEE Systems’ comprehensive Autonomous Bus solution, field-tested through several successful pilot runs through an organized partner consortium in Taiwan (the MIT Autonomous Bus Team), is delivering the sustainable and cost-effective ART system that JTA was looking for.
